Syncopation
March music accents the beats. Groove music accents between them: on the '&'s, or arriving a half-beat early. That's syncopation: putting weight where the count doesn't expect it. The surprise against the steady pulse is the push you dance to.
On the beat vs. off the beat
Same pulse underneath. The first bar claps with the count: sturdy, square. The second claps only the '&'s: suddenly it leans forward. Nothing changed but where the weight falls.
The push: arriving early
Harmony syncopates too. Both demos change I to IV in bar one and come home in bar two. The first change lands on beat 3; the second jumps in on the '& of 2', half a beat early. That anticipation is pop's favorite move.
A famous face: the Charleston
One long note, then a stab on the '& of 2', then air. Two onsets, a century of dance music. Count it and clap it.
