15.2 · Making Beats

The backbeat

In nearly every pop groove, the kick holds beats 1 and 3 and the snare answers on 2 and 4. That answer is the backbeat. It's where crowds clap. Build it layer by layer, then clap it yourself.

Layer the groove

The demo beat, one voice at a time. Watch the snare lane. Those two hits are the backbeat.

Kick

The same groove, written down

Drummers read this as two lines, one per voice. The kick speaks, rests while the snare answers, and the rests are what make each line readable. Grid and notation are the same picture.
