16.2 · The Grand Staff

The grand staff

Brace the treble staff over the bass staff and you get the grand staff: the keyboard drawn on paper. Right hand reads the top, left hand reads the bottom, and middle C is the hinge: one ledger line below the treble, one ledger line above the bass. Same key, two doorways.

The hinge: middle C

Walk down the treble staff and you land on middle C. Walk up the bass staff: middle C again. The two staves overlap on exactly one note.

Two staves, one instrument

A left hand holding roots low while the right stacks chords above. Neither staff alone could write this without drowning in ledger lines.

Write on both

The pair, stacked. The treble's bottom ledger note and the bass's top ledger note are the same middle C. Write it on each staff and hear it match.

𝄞

The treble half: middle C is its low ledger note.

𝄢

The bass half: middle C is its high ledger note.
